True Friendship: Living a Devout Life with St. Francis de Sales

August 15, 2006

On True Friendship

“Form friendships only with those who can share virtuous things with you.”

“If your mutual reciprocal exchanges concern charity, devotion, and Christian perfection, O God how precious this friendship will be!”

“For those who live in the world and desire to embrace true virtue it is necessary to unite together in holy, sacred friendship”

“St. Paul accuses them (pagans) of being people ‘without affection’, that is, that they had no true friendships.” (Romans 1:31)

“Perfection consists not in having no friendships, but in having only those which are good, holy, and sacred.”

St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life
