Saints’ Trivia

February 12, 2007

Did you know that Athanasius of Alexandria, strong fighter against the Arian heresy for the Nicene conception of Christ as fully human and fully divine used to be called the “black dwarf” by his strongest opponents? This name was attributed to him due to his dark complexion and short stature. This is definitely a different St. Athanasius from the one we see in icons!

Regardless of the labels his enemies imposed on him, this great doctor of the faith remains one of the most important theologians of the Church due to his doctrinal firmness, his contribution to the finalization of the Christian canon, and his many writings on pastoral and theological topics that have served as a testimony of early monasticism (The Life of St. Anthony) and doctrinal struggles of the early Christian Church (Four Orations against the Arians).
